God is faithful and just. He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb 13:5). I am a mum of 2 bubbly and cheeky kids, and since having twokids, it has always been a challenge to juggle everything – home, ministry, work, family, and personal life. For a long time, it has been difficult to sit down to listen to sermons –to understand or absorb anything. It was even more difficult to spend time with God; to do any significant devotion. And it was almost impossible to read the Word of God. I tried putting in the effort to read different devotional books written by mums in a bidto find my way back to God, but it has been fruitless for awhile.
I try to take time to pray, when I’m driving or when I’m lying down with my kids at night, or when I’m in the shower. But sometimes, it was too tiring to multitask. For quite a while, I felt like I was drawing further and further away from God. I was upset why I wasn’t able to get back into things and why it was such an uphill struggle. I’m sure that I am not the only mother that struggles with it. I find that sometimes mothers are so consumed by our little ones, that we may not have any energy left to go to God even. However, I want to encourage us with my testimony that God never gives up on us when we choose to keep pressing on.
Two years ago, after discussing with my husband, I decided to commit myself to the study of Scripture. I am always convictedof this verse Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” So I joined a Bible study group, called Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). It’s a women’s Bible study group that studies through the books of the Bible. The year that I started, it was a study on the book of Revelation. At first, I found it difficult to commit to it weekly. However, I always feel encouraged when I attend the sessions – listening to the Word, and being in the discussion groups What I’ve come to realiseis that it is truly refreshing just to be able to read and understand the Word. And I believed that it was the Holy Spirit who was drawing me back, week in and week out, studyingthe Word.
Thischanged my whole mindset of trying to read devotionalsand books on getting back to God. It was His Wordand His Word alone that brought me back to Him. I’ve been going to this Bible study group not because it’s a nice time away from kids, but because the Word refreshes my heart weekly. And through studying the Word, I get to know God more, and it has challenged me not just to be devoted to the studying of His Word, but also to the sharing of the gospel.
Encouragementfor all mothers out there: Sometimes it is the very thing that we have in our hands (i.e., the Bible, the Word of God), that will show us the way in all that we do.
